Homebrew is a package manager for software that isn't provided by the OS. Homebrew installs packages to their own directory and then symlinks their files into /usr/local (on macOS Intel). Homebrew won’t install files outside its prefix and you can place a Homebrew installation wherever you like. Homebrew is written in Ruby and is designed to be easy to use, easy to develop with and easy to contribute to.
